Brownies Take the Prize

Hi Everyone!! I hope this beautiful May evening finds you well.

I should have known that brownies would win our survey. Especially, Lollies brownie - its rich, fudgie and down right delicious. Pound cake and shortbread cookies tied for second place. Pound cake is great classic - rich, buttery, moist and dense - yum!! Shortbread cookies are just as buttery with a great cookie crunch. The snickerdoodle came in last with one vote. Snickerdoodles are a great cookie. Quite simple - buttery, sweet and finished off with cinnamon sugar. Clearly our participants haven't tried Lollies snickerdoodle yet!!

Watch for our next survey. It will be seasonal -think rhubard!

Pressure? What Pressure?

There is no pressure like the pressure of baking for someone. Don't get me wrong, I love baking and I love when people enjoy my baked goods. But the pressure of making the perfect cake or pie - there is nothing like it. I feel the pressure with a chocolate chip cookie for myself, let a lone a customer or, gasp, a TV show!

It all makes me wonder what it is like to be on Iron Chef or Last Cake Standing. How do those chefs, those experts, keep their cool under those constraints. Or don't they? Or are they feeling the pressure to time? Time can freak one out if you don't have enough of it. Is it the ingredients? Is she short 1/2 tsp vanilla? Is it a different baking sheet? I could go on, but I think you get the picture. So do I now that I have put it into words.

Susan and I baked tsoureki (Greek Easter bread) for a local Greek grocery store last week for Greek Easter. It turned out beautifully. It tasted delicious and we sold every loaf. But the pressure to make it was making us both a nervous wreck. Is the dough rising? Do we have enough dough? We used every baking sheet we could find. We were switching out loaves, checking the bottom of loaves, putting loaves back in the oven. We were stressed to the hilt. We committed to a certain amount of loaves. Each loaf had to come out perfectly. We had only so much time and so many ingredients.

After 12 hours of baking we finally finished. We had perfect tsoureki. We cooled it and bagged it. We were on our feet all day, we were tired and we were done.

I delivered the tsoureki around 5:30PM to the grocer. I walked out the door of the store and I was done. I felt like I was the Iron Chef. I felt I had won the Best Cake Standing. It was over.

We did get a call from the grocer the next day "do you have any more bread?" I laughed, told him we sold it all. He said "it was worth a try". He sold every loaf we took to him. Now, its over. At least until next year. :)

The Best Brownie in Columbus

I must start this entry off by telling everyone how much fun it was to do the Great Brownie Experiment. My niece and I went from bakery to bakery on Saturday picking up the brownies. All the shops were adorable and we were even able to go to a few places that weren't on our agenda. We stumbled onto a scooter shop that sold baked goods and coffee in addition to the selling scooters (Kick Start on N. High St.). Now, back to the topic at hand -brownies.

The tasters were, Mark - my significant other and totally unbiased critic, Corrine - my niece (I taught her everything she knows about food, right Corrine?), Eric - our youngest taster, who like many in his age group, just wants a treat, and Lolli - a baker and lover of sweets - "I get it from my Dad".

We judged the brownies on presentation, flavor, moistness, texture and overall taste. The scale was 1 - 5. 5 being the best and 1 being the least best. We tasted one brownie at at time and rinsed with water between brownies. We turned the TV down, gained our composure and dug in. We sniffed the brownies, bit them & let them come to body temperature before digesting. We concentrated on our key elements and took notes.

We were all surprised by how different each brownie tasted. The intensity of the chocolate flavors varied significantly, as did the textures. Some melted in your month while others we're coerced down with the sweetness for frosting.

The winner, hands down, was the brownie from the Suisse Bake Shop on Polaris Parkway (its in the picture). It was the smallest brownie and the least expensive brownie, but boy, it was good. It was fudgie, moist and smooth. It was fancy, yet unpretentious. I highly recommend you try one for yourself.

Other brownies in the experiment were -
Sugardaddy's - Auburn Original - chocolate chunks & toasted walnuts
Piece of Cake - Fudge Brownie
Chocolate Cafe - Fudge Brownie
Mozarts - German Chocolate Brownie - different than the others - they didn't have a fudge brownie.

The Great Brownie Experiment

Okay, so I decided I am going to find the best brownie in Columbus Ohio. Excluding or should I include, Lollies Baked Goods Fudgie Boo Brownie? I'll have to think about that a bit more. I am, of course, going to let each bakery know that I am reviewing their brownie for Lollies Baked Goods blog. This may turn out to be an expensive experiment, yet, it shall be a delicious one. I guess I won't be able to bag my run for the next week or so.

If anyone has a favorite brownie I need to try please let me know.

Baking Makes Us Happy

Baking. I LOVE baking. Baking makes me happy and I am so excited about starting our baking company, Lollies Baked Goods. I think I am as excited about blogging about Lollies as I am about finally starting Lollies.

Here's a bit about us at Lollies. Susan and I have been in business together for a while. We are running a business that has no use at all for our domestic skills or creative desires. We've been dreaming about opening our baking business for over 5 years. Our dream was to make money running a non-baking business to fund our creative outlet - Lollies Baked Goods. The day has finally arrived, ready or not.

We've been trying recipes on our friends and families for the past few years in hopes of this day. We each have a few favorite recipes we have brought to Lollies. We hope you enjoy them as much as our family and friends do.

In preparation for our opening, we've been researching our local market and have had the opportunity to patronize some great bake shops. Cute designs, great colors, and great baked goods. All great places, but not Lollies Baked Goods. We are not into fancy treats, or beautiful cakes - although I love a good cake with buttercream frosting, we are into great baked goods made with fresh ingredients and with a little bit of happiness mixed in for good measure.
